Cardiology
Although some of the early stages of heart failure in dogs have no visible signs, heart failure can be diagnosed through a clinical evaluation by a veterinarian.
Chest Radiographs (x-rays)
Chest radiographs are important components in the diagnosis of heart disease. A diseased heart will most often enlarge over time. In advanced stages, fluid may be detectable in the chest cavity (pleural effusion) or in the lungs themselves (pulmonary edema).
Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a tracing of the electrical activity of the heart. It documents heart rate and rhythm. In addition, subtle changes can occur in the shape of the ECG spikes that can reveal certain types of pathological changes in the heart. It is a rapid and painless test that can be performed right in our office.
A cancer diagnosis in a pet is not a sentence of immediate euthanasia. Chemotherapy is a treatment option. It's best for cancers that involve multiple sites or sites that aren't susceptible to surgery or radiation. While the drugs used in veterinary chemotherapy are the same as human chemotherapy, animals often tolerate chemotherapy much better than people do. Even though the drugs are usually well tolerated by dogs and cats, they are very potent drugs and can cause serious side effects so dogs and cats are closely monitored while receiving chemotherapy. Early in the course of chemotherapy weekly examinations and blood tests are usually performed.
ultrasound
Echocardiography is a highly specialized, non-invasive test that allows the veterinary cardiologist to "see" inside the heart using a form of sonogram. An ultrasound probe is placed on the chest and sound waves are used to assess heart structure, chamber size, and heart valves. The ultrasound exam allows for evaluation of functional abnormalities such as weak heart muscle contractions or incompetent heart valves.
