General Surgery information
Our hospital is well-equipped to perform most minor and major surgical procedures from spays and neuters to more complicated orthopedic, trauma, emergency and soft tissue surgeries. In addition, we are equipped for dental procedures including cleaning and tooth extractions, exploratory laporatomies, rectal colon and urogenital surgery, caesarian sections, declaws and all types of cancer surgery.
Prior to surgery, each patient receives a thorough physical examination to identify any existing medical conditions that might endanger your pet's health. Because not all problems can be detected on examination, we also require pre-anesthetic blood testing. These tests not only give us a more complete picture of your pet's health, but allow us to tailor an anesthetic regime that is specific for your pet. show more ...
Anesthesia
Preanesthetic blood testing is important in reducing the risk of anesthesia. Every pet needs blood testing before surgery to ensure that the liver and kidneys can metabolize the anesthetic. Even apparently healthy animals can have serious organ system problems that cannot be detected without blood testing. If there is a problem, it is much better to find it before it causes anesthetic or surgical complications. Animals that have minor dysfunction will handle the anesthetic better if they receive IV fluids during surgery. If serious problems are detected, surgery can be postponed until the problem is corrected. show more ...
Any surgical procedure involving the skeletal system (bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons) falls under the category of orthopedic surgery. Examples of these surgeries include the management of broken bones, ruptured ligament stabilization, tumor removals that may involve bone or amputation, and procedures to aid in the treatment of hip dysplasia.
Soft Tissue Surgery
Any surgical procedure involving anatomy other than the skeletal system falls under the category of soft tissue surgery. There are many different types of procedures within this category, including, but not limited to, elective, preventative, corrective, traumatic, diagnostic, and cosmetic surgeries. Examples of these surgeries include the sterilization surgeries, tumor removals, laceration/wound repairs, biopsies, and abdominal exploratories.
Acquired soft tissue diseases or conditions are varied. Pets may ingest inanimate objects that require surgery to remove or they may suffer trauma requiring surgery such as a ruptured spleen or bladder from being hit by a car. Pets can get diseases like humans such as gallstones, kidney or bladder stones, and stomach ulcers. Just as with people with these conditions, surgery is sometimes necessary. show more ...
Pain Management
Pain control starts before surgery is performed. We now know that medicating prior to the onset of pain results in better pain control with less total drug required. This is called pre-emptive analgesia. All of our surgical patients receive a premedication drug, the type and amount depending on the level of expected discomfort.
Recent advances in pain medications have allowed for better pain control in pets than ever before. We administer a pain injection prior to surgery. After surgery, additional pain medication is sometimes required. This may be injectable and given intermittently or on a slow intravenous dose. Oral medications for pain is often prescribed for the first few days to weeks at home. Any animal that appears painful will receive additional pain medication.
Surgical Recovery
The recovery area is centrally located, adjacent to the treatment area and allows our Doctors and licensed veterinary technicians to directly and continuously observe recovering patients and give the finest in nursing care. It is equipped to keep pets comfortable and safe with personal as well as electronic monitoring. Infusion pumps, oxygen and heating pads when needed.
Pain management is a vital part of every surgical procedure performed. Our veterinarians will design a specific pain management protocol to assure comfort and the quickest possible recovery for your pet.
